WARNING: Respirable Crystalline Silica May Cause Severe Health Damages

Quartz products in themselves are not hazardous; however, potential hazards arise during processing and fabrication. This is because the processing of the product generates very small crystalline silica particles, which can pose significant health risks to workers.

Exposure to these particles can lead to silicosis, a severe and irreversible lung disease that causes permanent damage to the lungs. Silica dust particles can become trapped in the lung tissue, causing inflammation and scarring, which impairs the lungs’ ability to absorb oxygen.

Common symptoms of silicosis include shortness of breath, cough, and fatigue, which may not always be immediately associated with silica exposure. According to a USA OSHA alert from February 2015, workers exposed to airborne crystalline silica are also at a higher risk of developing lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and kidney disease. Some medical experts suggest that these workers may also face an increased risk of autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

Moreover, contact with mineral dust can cause temporary irritation of the skin and eyes. Individuals with pre-existing respiratory issues or impaired lung function may be more vulnerable to the effects of this substance, especially when exposed to any airborne particulate matter.

Smoking can further elevate the risk of lung injury, and inhalation might exacerbate the progression of tuberculosis. Additionally, those with pre-existing skin disorders may be more susceptible to the effects of this material.

To safeguard themselves from crystalline silica exposure and potential health risks, workers handling this product must take essential precautions and comply with all relevant laws and regulations.

They should use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiratory protection, gloves, and eye protection.

During product use, it is essential to avoid creating dust by utilizing wet methods when cutting, grinding, or drilling. Work should only be conducted in well-ventilated areas, and confined spaces without sufficient air circulation should be avoided. Moreover, workers should not eat, drink, or smoke in dusty areas. After handling the product, they must clean up dust using a HEPA-filtered vacuum or wet method, avoiding the use of compressed air for blowing.
